The Health benefits of Apples.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. I'm sure most everyone has heard this at one time or another. I remember as a small child Grandma z would preach this to us kids. Every time we visited she would pull out a basket of apples for us. Grandma believed in always having apples around so she grew her own. I remember the beautiful spring days playing in the orchard under the blooming apple trees.

Ah, childhood memories! But what does this have to do with health, you ask? Well for those of you that suffer from Acid Reflux, the lowly apple is the cure.

Apples fall on the alkaline side of the food chain. The reason that we get acid reflux is that our bodies have become too acidic. Acid reflux is our bodies way of telling us that we have a problem.

The fix is to eat 2 - 4 apples per day. One with each meal and one before bed. Also you need to cut down on the amount of acidic foods that you eat. This means more vegetables! And stay away from the soda and foods with high sugar content. Today I picked up a can of Pepsi, it contains PHOSPHORIC ACID & CITRIC ACID. I remember in my younger years using Coke to clean the battery terminals on my car. The acid in Coke did a wonderful job. That's when I gave up drinking soda. Now I admit that I still enjoy a glass of soda from time to time (once a month) but my beverage of choice today is plain water. Cool, refreshing, and no calories.

Another thing to consider when making the switch is the prevalence of cancer in your family. Cancer seems to prefer an acidic body. Keeping your body more neutral may decrease your chances of cancer and can help fight it if you already have cancer. Studies done by the Mayo Clinic and the National Cancer Institute reported that eating apples can reduce your risk of contracting certain types of cancer by as much as 50%. A study by researchers from the University of Minnesota and the University of Oslo, Norway, found that apples were one of three foods (along with red wine and pears) that decrease the risk of mortality for both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

Apples are fat, sodium and cholesterol free, and a medium-sized apple is about 80 calories. Apples are a great source of fiber, with each apple containing about five grams. They are also an excellent source of antioxidants. But, don't peel your apple before eating it, since two-thirds of the fiber and a great deal of antioxidants are found in the peel.
