Uva Ursi, also called Bearberry, often described as a "diuretic", does not strongly promote urination but rather serves as a urinary antiseptic. It contains arbutin and methylarbutin which are transformed into hydroquinone in the intestine. After this compound has been absorbed by the intestine, it binds to other compounds in the urine (if the urine is alkaline), forming two additional chemicals which kill or inhibit bacteria in the urinary tract. Uva Ursi / Bearberry is good for yeast, kidney, and bladder infections, also for any inflammatory disease of the urinary tract. While stimulating the urinary tract it also helps reduce blood in urine and soothes the bladder walls. Uva Ursi / Bearberry contains allantoin to help heal wounds and is strongly anti-biotic against such conditions as e-coli and staph. It treats loss of bladder control. It is used as a diabetes remedy for excessive sugar in the blood. It is given to postpartum women to return the womb to its natural size, as well as to prevent infection of the womb after childbirth. Bearberry was long used as a urinary antiseptic by physicians; it was official in the U. S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1926. In Germany, bearberry is approved as a urinary antiseptic. NOT FOR children under 2. NOT FOR pregnant women as it stimulates the uterus to contract. |
